WHY THE LAW NEEDS TO BE REPEALED

READ THE FACTS BELOW, AND LEARN WHY REPEALING THE 1859 LAW IS A CRITICAL STEP OUR GREAT STATE MUST TAKE.

A majority of our state supports it

A 2022 survey from the Marquette Law School, showed that more than half, 58%, of Wisconsinites said they were “very concerned” about abortion. Whereas 24% said they were “somewhat concerned” about abortion.

In that same survey, 27% of Wisconsinites believed that abortion should be legal in all cases, and an additional 31% of Wisconsinites said that Abortion should be legal in most cases.

REPEALING THE LAW CREATES A SAFER STATE

According to the Wisconsin Department of Health, 1.2 million adults have experienced sexual assault in their lifetimes, which is ⅓ of people who identify as a woman, and ⅕ of people who identify as a male.

Banning abortion does not prevent abortion, it prevents safe abortions. Many countries have abortion bans, yet according to the World Health Organization, 25 million unsafe abortions still occur each year across the world. Unsafe abortions can be protected with greater abortion protections and access.

WE MUST BECOME MORE IN TOUCH WITH OUR NEIGHBORS

The State of Wisconsin is now considered an island when it comes to abortion access, as Minnesota, Illinois, and Iowa all have protections established for abortion. Most recently, Michigan passed with 56.66% support, constitutional protections for abortion in the November 8th, 2022 General Election.

PEOPLE DON'T DESERVE CRIMINAL PUNISHMENT FOR ACCESSING HEALTHCARE

Wisconsin’s 1849 Abortion Law states that abortion is illegal in all cases, including rape and incest, except where “advised by 2 other physicians as necessary, to save the life of the mother;”. Additionally, this law also applies to abortion when used during a miscarriage, which is an essential part of treating one. This has left individuals facing miscarriage on the hospital bed days without proper care and treatment because doctors fear being punished under this law. Doctors shoudl not be punished for doing their jobs, and individuals should not be punished for seeking the healthcare they are entitled to recieve.
